Gareth Southgate will drop Wayne Rooney for England’s Russia 2018 World Cup qualifier away to Slovenia, Sky Sports reports.

The Three Lions captain has been out of form for both club and country following his recent performances in the Premier League and against Malta where he was booed at Wembley Stadium after a miss-hit shot.

Reports suggest that the return of Eric Dier who was rested on last weekend’s victory to Malta will give the forward-turned-midfielder no room for a first team place in the midfield.

Rooney who will turn 31 this month has also come under fire form the fans at Old Trafford and Jose Mourinho has been forced to relegate United’s second all-time to goal scorer to the bench.

Meanwhile, Sky Sports also revealed that the 117 capped veteran has told friends that he is ‘shocked and disappointed’ at Southgate’s reaction after the 2 – 0 win over Malta.

There have been calls for the former Everton striker to call it quits with the national team and as reality seems to dawn on the captain which could force Rooney to premature retirement.

Rooney is England’s highest goal scorer with 53 goals since making his debut in 2004 and have just one goal to his name for both club and country in the last 12 matches.
